New in Shards

New features

Ours, on top of the original game, in our client and on our server. The townsfolk, critters and wildlife are drawn by your client alone, and each can be turned off.

A more vibrant world

Birds cross open skies by day and bats flit through caves. Butterflies, fireflies, falling leaves and leaping fish, grass and pebbles underfoot, and rats, spiders and bunnies scurrying about. Rain leaves puddles, and storms bring lightning and thunder.

Bustling cities

Townsfolk run errands from door to door, guards walk their beat and inns fill up in the evening. People carry torches after dark, chat as you pass, wave back when you wave and scatter from spells. The streets empty at night and in the rain.

A battle in the Arena of Kraanan: fighters and mages, a wall of fire and the crowd in the stands

Battles in the arena

In the Arena of Kraanan, fighters and mages fight in rounds, with swords, fireballs, lightning bolts and walls of fire, while the stands cheer. The beaten join the crowd, and the last one standing takes the applause.

Quests you can find

A gold "!" shows who has a quest for you and a "?" where one is ready to hand in, over their heads and on the map. Double-click them for the story, the objectives and the reward. Your quests keep count as you go, and the map shows you the way.

Better lighting

Enhanced Visuals adds soft highlights, flickering flames, light that stops at walls, shaded corners and shadows under figures. Turn it off for the original look.

Build your own rooms

A modern room editor

A TypeScript port of roomedit, the WinDEU-based Doom level editor the original rooms were made with. Draw rooms on a map, see them in 3D with the game's own lighting, and walk them at a player's eye height.

It compiles rooms for the original server and for Server 104, so they work on classic and fan-run servers alike.

It's in beta: there's no download yet, so you run it from its source code. Its user manual covers installing it and building a first room.
