Every new character starts at the Inn of Raza, at 20 health. The tutorial is the line of quests that takes you from there through Marion to Cor Noth, from 20 health to about 40. On the way you learn where to buy what you need, how to train, how to travel, and who rules the land. Or skip it, and start at 40 health in the city of your choice.
Follow the gold "!" over people's heads: each quest leads to the next. Questing explains the marks, the quest window and tracking, and the quest chains show the whole road.
Setting out#
You start with a mace, 500 shillings and reagents for ten casts of each spell you chose, and you know Blink and Phase. Unless you've remade a character in the last five hours, you get another 500 shillings and ten more casts' worth of reagents.
Until you reach 50 health, dying costs you nothing: you drop nothing, lose nothing and your gear doesn't break. From 50 health, or once you join a guild, a death breaks the weapon and armour you wear (a smith can mend them), and other players can fight you where fighting is allowed.
Raza: 20 to 30 health#
Marcus, behind the counter of the inn, gives the first quest.
-
Arms for the Road: Marcus sends you for a shield, with the coin to pay for it. Talk to Tomas at the Blacksmith of Raza and buy a small round shield from him: right-click him and choose Buy.
-
The Elder of Raza: hear out Rodric d'Stane, in his hut in the south-east corner of town.
-
Restless Graves and The Shadow Mummy of Raza: put ten mummies to rest in the mausoleum on the north side of town, and slay the shadow mummy that wakes them.
-
A Strong Arm for Raza: go back to Marcus, who has three jobs for you:
- A Way Home: walk into the portal at the edge of town. Once a portal knows you, you can step back to it from any other portal you've touched.
- Rats in the Stores and The Farol Road: eight giant rats in the outskirts, and eight centipedes on the edge of the Forest of Farol. Take them again as often as you like until you're ready for the road. While you're in Raza, Eric d'Jorn, behind the bar at Eric's Stout Spirits, has A Full Belly for you: watch your vigor, and eat when it runs low.
-
The Road to Marion: when you reach 30 health, Marcus sends you to his friend Tova, behind the bar in Marion.
Marion: 30 to 40 health#
Tova sends you to the people who need help: Morrigan at the Limping Toad, and Ran er'Hoth, the town's elder.
- A Mace from Colhorr: Tova sends you to Colhorr at Ye Olde Slasher Salesman for a mace, and Colhorr gives you the coin for it.
- Lady Aftyn's Remedy: Ran er'Hoth sends you with the town's coin to buy a cure poison potion from Lady Aftyn in her sanctuary. Drink one as soon as you're poisoned. She sells cure disease and purify potions too.
- The Temple of Shal'ille: Lady Aftyn sends you to Priestess Xiana, in the Deep Woods of Ileria just outside town, to learn Minor Heal. Anyone may learn it, whatever their school.
- Hunts: Ran er'Hoth wants the crypt's first chamber cleared of spectral mummies; Morrigan wants slimes cleared from the shore, fungus beasts from the Valley of Ileria and spiders from the Forest of Farol.
- Word to Cor Noth: from 40 health, Ran er'Hoth sends his report to Sergeant Rook in Cor Noth, with 500 shillings for your first lesson.
Cor Noth: 40 health and up#
Rook, at the Weapon Master's Abode, and D'Franco, at the Cibilo Creek Inn, finish your schooling.
- A Lesson from Rook: right-click Rook and choose Buy to see the skills he teaches, and learn one. He gives you some of your coin back for the next lesson.
- Put It to Practice: skills and spells grow as you use them, and training points push one along faster. Rook gives you 400 training points as you take it: open the Train window (the Train button on your Stats, or type
train) and spend some. - Cor Noth's Portal: touch Cor Noth's portal. Touch one in every town you reach.
- The Meridian Museum: visit the museum and step through one of its old portals into the land's history. Mychel, its curator, then has a story for each old town: The Young University, Both Halves of the Crown, Snow on Old Jasper and Marion Before the Temple.
- The Hall of Genealogy: read the great towns' histories in the Hall of Genealogy, where you can choose your hometown.
- Herbs from Solomon: buy reagents from Solomon at Solomon's Edibles. Many spells use them up as you cast.
- Hunts: spiders on the Merchant Way, ants in the Flatlands and orc raiders for Rook, fungus beasts at the river's source and red ants in the hills for D'Franco.
Once you've touched Cor Noth's portal, Rook sends you to meet the three lieges, each in their own city: The Princess of Barloque, Jonas and the Rebels and The Duke of Tos. Each city's innkeeper sends you to touch its portal: Pritchett in Barloque (The Royal Portal), Widow Qesino in Jasper (A Door to Jasper) and Paddock in Tos (The Gate Home). Factions explains what serving one means, and Magic how to learn a school.
Buying and selling#
The tutorial takes you to each kind of merchant once:
| You need | Go to | In the tutorial |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons and shields | A blacksmith | Tomas in Raza, Colhorr in Marion |
| Potions | A healer | Lady Aftyn in Marion |
| Spells | Their school's teacher | Priestess Xiana, for Minor Heal |
| Skills | A weapon master, and some smiths | Rook in Cor Noth; Tomas in Raza teaches some too |
| Reagents | A reagent seller | Solomon in Cor Noth |
Right-click a merchant and choose Buy to see what they sell and teach. Merchants who buy have a Sell button too, listing only what they'll take from you and for how much. A person's wiki page lists what they sell and teach.
Skipping the tutorial#
Already know the ropes? When you make a character, tick Skip the tutorial, start in on the creator's Name tab and choose a city: Marion, Jasper, Cor Noth, Barloque or Tos. When your new character enters the world, they:
- start at 40 health, with 1,000 training points to spend in the Train window;
- wear leather armour and a small round shield, and carry 1,000 shillings in all;
- know the portals of Raza and Marion;
- are a citizen of the city you chose, at its inn;
- are on the main quests with Word to Cor Noth: take Ran er'Hoth's report to Rook.
You get no extra spells or skills: learn them from their teachers. You can only choose it once, within an hour of making the character and before you've grown past 20 health, and from the same browser you made the character in. You can still change your hometown later, at the Hall of Genealogy in Cor Noth.
